Monochrome MOnday (busy)

The bride and her posse yesterday while the surf cranked along the open beachies - a busy shooting day, but one of the best weddings I've been too. BIG thanks crew for your patience while I got the shots, for the great food, for the awesome live music from Zach Gunthorpe and for the great stories shared. Yewwwwww!

Half a Twin

One of the first times I picked this guy up, I split my pants. It was at his christening and I am his Godfather. He's one half of the Wilkie twins who'll render your property real pretty, unless Noosa is pumping. Both twins had downed tools on this mid-week work day to get some quality brine time.
They're a deadly duo those young fellas. I'm humbled to be called onto waves by them, when it get's way too much hassle for me to take on the pack. Thanks guys! (I promise to take more snaps)

Short on short (backdoor backhand)

Considering the last brilliant surf I had a few weeks ago was backhand on my shortie quad, it's about time I posted up a few short shots of shacks and shaded shorties.

Hava go

I hear a lot of talk from people who don't surf saying they'd like to try it and despite my encouragement, there's often more talk than action. It's the same with life in general - a lot of talk but not a lot of follow through execution of the talk.
This post is for those who get off their backsides and have ago at stuff in life that's a bit out of their comfort zone. Congratulations.

Fall down seven times, get up eight

The arc from exhilaration to annihilation took exactly 1.5 seconds, according to my camera. I'm sure it felt more like one of those slow motion disasters for this chap. who not only got drilled but copped three more set waves on the head. Leggie (leash) didn't snap either! Talk about putting "fall down seven times, get up eight" into practice.

Monochrome Monday (barking at light)

Surf photographers have to be barking mad.

You stand in the sun for hours while everybody else is having fun. Or you swim around trying not to get run over, so you can get a shot worth keeping.

There's no money in it, though your equipment outlay is enough to feed a small third world village for a week. Maybe it's just barking at the light.

But I intend to keep doing it as long as I can. Yep, it makes as much sense as trying to hit a white ball into a hole 18 times or losing a heap of money watching horses run around in a big circle.

But linear, economic rationalist logic explains nothing here, so I'll leave the final word to legend Kiwi photog Jackie Ranken, who says:
"I am at my most settled when I have a camera in my hands and the space, the time and the light to make photographs and print them."
